In an environmental initiative, volunteers cleared the banks of the Baleshwar and Bhairab rivers in Kachua upazila of Bagerhat yesterday, much to the delight of the local residents.
KM Abu Naushad, upazila nirbahi officer of Kachua, led the cleanliness drive from Kachua Zero Point at 6:00am, with support from the upazila administration, JB Business Group, Team Kachua, BD Clean, and numerous local volunteers.
The volunteers collected heaps of waste in sacks and transported those on vans to designated areas to dispose of them.
Plans are in place to process the waste for productive use.
Local residents expressed satisfaction, as the cleanup effort marked a significant improvement in the riverbanks’ environment.
Sheikh Sujan, a volunteer, said such efforts will beautify the riverbanks and ensure a healthier environment for residents.
Mehedi Hasan, another volunteer, called for such cleanliness campaigns to be conducted regularly.
“Also, monitoring is essential to keep the riverbanks clean in future,” he added.
Sardar Suman, secretary of the Kachua Market Traders’ Association, pledged to raise awareness among traders about proper waste disposal.
“Traders will be encouraged to dispose of wastes responsibly, and those who will fail to comply will face consequences,” he said.
KM Abu Naushad said the upazila administration has dug a 50-foot-long, 50-foot-wide, and 8-foot-deep pit for disposal of the market’s wastes.
“Biodegradable wastes will be utilised effectively, while non-biodegradable materials like polythene will be destroyed,” he added.
