Description
1994 Morgan Plus 4 Roadster
The Morgan Plus 4 was a series of roadsters introduced in 1950. The Plus 4 was developed from the Morgan 4/4, and was created to be a more powerful, larger sports car. This new model was mostly offered in two and four seat roadster body styles, but a two or four seat drophead coupe was also available. Over the course of production, Morgan used a wide range of inline four engines to power the +4. Three main generations were built: 1st Gen (1950-1969), 2nd Gen (1985-2000), and 3rd Gen (2005-2021).
Offered for consignment, a sporty little Brit that at first glance one could mistake for a kit car,but nothing could be further from the truth. Throughout history, British car maker Morgan pulled out all the stops when it comes to making their fans feel and look cool and this Plus 4 model right out of 1994 is no different with timeless sports car lines. This one of 25 imported into the States for the model year remains true to form with a decidedly British Rover powertrain, an all aluminum body, a new interior, and of course no rust to deal with, and a reliable Rover 1944cc engine to push you along on your jaunt through the windy roads ahead, offering up just a cracking time mate!
Exterior
A view from the side shows the sexy curved lines produced by the cowled hood front, low-profile doors, and beautifully designed rear. On this body are the fender and running board attachments which start up front just above the shiny bumper, and curve lazily upward providing room for the semi-integrated bullet style chrome headlights that flank the front chrome waterfall style grille and auxiliary lighting. At their crescendo, a turn signal light is mounted on, then they begin their slow approach to the running board which becomes level way rearward, just below the doors. We are preparing to go back up again on the back fender where it takes a much more aggressive ascent with its C curve, reaching its peak at the rear tonneau cover, then artfully heading downward to gracefully frame the luggage rack equipped trunk and rear mounted full spare tire. At the bottom it greets the bumper which curves around the bottom of the back of this car. These lovely fenders and running board provide the framing for 15-inch chromed wire wheels with solid center knockoffs on all 4 corners. All this aluminum body sex is bathed in ivory cream and it is fairly deep in application. A nearly new chocolate brown mohair and canvas convertible top and side curtains are available for the cooler drive times, and operate flawlessly, although manually. A chocolate brown tonneau is also included with your purchase.
Interior
These short doors swing on their front hinges and reveal new smooth saddleleather crafted with heavily padded upper sills, a simple black latch mechanism and shiny screws to fasten them to the interior of the doors. Freshly recovered tuck and roll buckets in supple saddle leather provide seating for 2 and is fronted by an heavilypadded walnut burl dash. Here, instruments pepper the wood and offer up important running data from the engine, as well as speed. Dash central holds more gauges within a black bezel with rocker switches below and on the passenger side is a simple glovebox. Beautiful thick pile chocolate brown carpet floods the floors where we note the shifter and handbrake on the saddle leather finished hump within its own leather clad consolette. A Nardi Torino wood rimmed 3 spoke steering wheel presents itself to the driver on the left hand side. Behind the seats is storage space for your bring alongs and offers up ample room for the side curtains and tonneau cover as well.
Drivetrain
Undoing the brown leather bonnet strap and a lift of either side of the centrally hinged hood reveals a Rover twin cam 4 cylinder in the form of a 1944cc engine capable of making 134hp,which is looking nice and clean and well maintained. It is fed fossils by electronic fuel injection and has a Leyland LT77 5-speed manual transmission on the back. A 3.73 geared rear axle moves this lightweight sports car down the country roads with ease.
Undercarriage
Very simply put, simple! Framework is steel channel with crossmembers and plenty of rust-free steel panels to cover the entire bottom of this car. Up front, independent coil spring suspension is installed, and on the back a solid axle and leaf springs are providing the ride. Power disc brakes for the front, and power drums for the rear...STOP!
Drive-AbilityBeing a sucker for anything from across the pond with wheels I shoved my partner in crime and all around good guy to the side so I could be the wheelman. The throaty exhaust lets you know you're in a sports car and it drives beautifully, handles great, has decent acceleration, and shifts smoothly. Braking is bias free on the panic stop, and it has plenty of room behind the wheel for a "normal" sized driver.
With its beautiful aluminum clad lines, ivory paint and chocolate brown accenting, along with those necessary wire wheels, i'm intrue modern British sports car heaven. A reliable British drivetrain, a slew of recent service and upkeep, and a plush new leather interior compliment this skate perfectly. Coupled with service records, the original certificate of origin and the build sheet with full options listing make for a cracking good show. Tallyho tip-top and all that rot!
